I used to think that all I had to do was put my head down and work hard. Take on special projects, do a great job, and my boss would recognize me for it.

If you have a good manager, that might be true. They will reward you with raises and promotions. Well, up to a certain point.

If you don’t have a great boss, then all of your hard work may not be recognized. You can’t wait and hope for good things to happen.

Later in my career, I finally learned that I had to treat my career like a business. I’ve mentioned this before in the newsletter, and I do recommend it to all of my clients.

I found that applying a business model framework is an excellent way to plan out your career goals too. It helps you get clear about what you want, the steps that you need to take, and the networking and partnerships that help make success possible.
