Listen now | We seem to have lost our way with team meetings. Too many arguments. Too many show-offs trying to prove how smart they are. Too many people trying to "win" instead of actually working together to reach a great outcome.
But if too many people are trying to "win," doesn't that imply that management might be rewarding individual winners rather than teams that win? If, so, then management is clearly showing that "what gets measured gets rewarded." How often is the team itself at fault? Perhaps something you can address in an upcoming newsletter. After all, in a great company, rewards will be at the team level, won't they?
Absolutely a problem. I always tell people, pay attention to who gets rewarded and promoted. Management frequently incentivizes the behavior that gets work done, even if it's cutthroat.
There is a mismatch between rewards and team effort. Sometimes teams get bonuses, but often at the expense of other orgs and teams. "We won. They lost."
But usually only individuals get promoted. Hence the behavior that people engage in that they know will get them noticed (instead of thinking about team and company).
Another insightful and delightful piece, Larry.
