"Employees performing in the top 20%."

I agree that this is a metric leadership will (attempt to) use. My hot take is that, in many information-based or creative roles, actually measuring performance is impossible. Don't get me wrong, there is an avalanche of data available to support whichever position leadership wants to take, but in my experience, data provides only the appearance of objectivity.

To the point of your post, though, I think regardless of what "percentile" you think you fall into, if times are getting tough where you work, it's time to "manage up" aggressively.
